The Business Situation
A Top 10 Pharmaceutical Company was preparing to launch a key asset in its Immunology Portfolio. This launch played a critical role in expanding the company’s commitment to serving patients with plaque psoriasis. Due to the company's growing pipeline of products targeted for launch in the near term, its internal "Launch Excellence" capabilities were experiencing bandwidth challenges. The company looked to a trusted partner, Magic Hat Consulting (MHC), to ensure this key product was launched with tremendous success.
Our Approach: Executing strategic objectives to design a launch plan and support cross-functional execution
MHC worked closely with the brand leader and key functional leaders to ensure a comprehensive launch plan was developed and tightly aligned to strategic imperatives. Our approach integrated the client’s launch standards and was further enhanced by leveraging MHC’s launch best practices and our deep Immunology expertise.
Key components of our approach included:
Align on Strategic Objectives: MHC first aligned with leadership on the strategic components of the product to be launched, establishing key imperatives and criteria for success.
Build an Integrated Launch Plan: Developed a comprehensive launch plan leveraging the client’s launch standards, enhanced by MHC’s industry and launch best practices, and grounded in deep Immunology expertise. The plan incorporated structured governance, cross-functional workflows, compliance considerations (including safety documentation processes), and Day 0 launch readiness planning.
Embed Dedicated Launch Leadership: Deployed a Senior Launch Leader, well-versed in the company’s ways of working, to lead execution across workstreams and serve as the central coordination point for the launch.
Enable Cross-Functional Execution: Established structured governance, facilitated senior stakeholder alignment, and ensured effective communication and accountability across functions.
Delivering Successful Outcomes
Accelerated Compliance and Execution Speed: Building on lessons from prior IMM portfolio launches, MHC applied innovative approaches to drive smarter, faster execution. This included enhancing and documenting a new safety documentation process and ownership model, helping ensure clearer accountability, rapid issue resolution, and a quicker to-market experience while maintaining compliance and operational efficiency.
Improved Launch Tracking and Decision Agility: A more structured asset list requiring FDA sampling, with clear prioritization, played a critical role in hitting launch milestones. A client template was also enhanced in order to drive agility and faster decision-making immediately after approval. The template was elevated by adding color-coding to track progress, spotlight bottlenecks, and quickly identify assets ready to pull forward.
Strengthened Governance and Cross-Functional Execution: MHC elevated the organization’s view of the Launch Program Manager by establishing clear governance at the executive level and coordinating the senior leaders to ensure transparency across functions. To sustain and strengthen this function, MHC identified key communication pain points and delivered a new operating model to streamline touchpoints and enable more effective decision-making. In addition, a robust Day 0 execution plan was documented to ensure speed to market and organizational alignment.
